Life Drawing for the Illustrator - Anthony Harrison

In Figure Drawing for the Illustrator 1, we work with model reference and produce character designs and illustrations from literary classics such as Dracula, Sherlock Holmes, Conan the Barbarian and Pride & Prejudice.

The course explores a variety of techniques and media in rendering the human figure, including pencil, pen and ink, ink and wash, watercolour and digital media. Emphasis is placed on drawing the nude, with the addition of draped figure reference. Studies are designed to be completed in a variety of durations. The principal drawing techniques explored are gesture, contour, and constructive approaches.

Students select a term project based on a literary source, produce character designs and a final image illustrating a scene from that source. The method of course delivery is by instructor demonstrations, lectures, working from model reference, and class discussion. Students are responsible for one project, which may be completed using either traditional or digital media, or a combination of the two.

This online course features pre-recorded tutorial videos that you can watch during the week when it is convenient for you, as well as weekly live video discussions (using Google Meet), both full-class and one-on-one sessions with the instructor.
